Understanding Application Outcomes

by | Oct 29, 2025 | Admissions

Congratulations, you have submitted some (or all) of your college applications!  Now what? As seniors move into the “waiting phase” of the college application process, we understand this can bring on a new kind of stress as you wait to hear back.  Let’s review the different decision outcomes and what they each mean:

Accepted: The exciting one! The college has offered you a spot in its next class. For Early Decision students, you withdraw your other applications.  For Early Action or Regular decision, you have until May 1st to make your decision and send a deposit.

Denied: The tough one. The college has rejected your application for admission. You will be OK!

Deferred: There is still a chance. The admissions committee has not yet made a final decision and will reevaluate your application, with the pool of regular decision applicants.

Other Outcomes:

Waitlisted: We typically see this in the spring after the regular applicant pool.  You are on a list of candidates who might be admitted if space becomes available after accepted students have responded to their offers. This selection process is typically randomized, there are no re-evaluations of an application or priority list.

Conditional Acceptance: The college will admit you if you meet certain requirements, typically, they will want to see final grades.

Spring Admit: You are offered admission to start in spring term rather than the standard fall term.

You have put your best foot forward over the last several months, so no matter the outcome, Campus Bound continues to support students from processing their decisions to help make their final choice!
