The Value of Campus Visits

by | Dec 30, 2025 | Tours and Visits

One of the many essential steps in developing a thoughtful college list is touring college campuses. Walking around a campus, as part of a tour or on your own, can provide an excellent sense of what a college is about. The fall and spring are ideal times to start planning college visits, particularly because school is in session. Most campus tours are run by current students who are trying to entice YOU, so these are good opportunities to talk to current students and explore more of what a campus has to offer.

Let’s talk about the importance of visiting colleges. Truly, visiting ANY college is a “good” experience. Even if you decide that you don’t like a college, you’ll learn valuable information that you’ll take with you as you develop your own college priorities, or “wants.” Physically stepping onto a college campus can provide you with helpful insights specific to you. For example, do you like the campus setting itself? Is this the kind of environment you could settle into? Why or why not?

When beginning the college search, there are other essentials to take note of when touring a college. This includes gaining a sense of the people around you, whether that be students or staff.  Pay attention to the general vibe of the college. Are people holding doors for each other? Do you see professors talking with students or their peers? Are students chatting and engaging each other or completely immersed in their phones? As a prospective student, you’ll want to take this one step further. Be honest with yourself: what kinds of interactions or bonding do YOU want to have when on a college campus?

Here are some helpful tips to plan your visits:

  • Schedule an official tour and /or information session (this can be done online through the college’s admission page on their website).
  • Do some research on the college.  Read about the college, study the website, etc., to learn more about the school before you visit.
  • Make a list of any questions you may have.  Consider: academic programs, student life, clubs, sports, admissions, job placement, etc.
  • If you have an area of study, try to plan to see the building where you will take classes; this can also provide an opportunity to speak with current students or professors.
