The College Essay in the AI Era

by | May 21, 2026 | Advice From Inside

As summer approaches, rising seniors begin one of the most important parts of the college application process: writing their college essays, especially the Common Application personal statement. This essay allows students to share more about who they are beyond grades, activities, and test scores. It allows admissions officers to understand a student’s personality, values, experiences, and perspective in a more personal and, importantly, authentic way.

At Campus Bound, our counselors and essay specialists work closely with students throughout every stage of the writing process. From brainstorming ideas to reviewing numerous essay drafts, we help students develop essays that genuinely reflect their voice and story. While we provide guidance and structure, the student’s individuality always remains at the center of the final product.

As the college admissions landscape continues to evolve, the growing presence of artificial intelligence has become an important topic of discussion. AI tools can certainly be helpful for brainstorming, grammar support, and refining word choice. However, students should be cautious about relying too heavily on these platforms to generate or structure their essays. Admissions officers read hundreds of essays each year and are highly skilled at identifying writing that feels overly polished, formulaic, or disconnected from a student’s authentic voice. AI-generated essays often lack the depth and individuality that make personal statements compelling.

At the same time, colleges themselves are increasingly incorporating AI into the review process.  This includes using AI tools to help evaluate application materials, including personal essays. This makes authenticity even more important. A strong essay is not about sounding perfect, it is about sounding real.

With multiple essays often required in a student’s college list, the process can feel overwhelming. Every student also approaches writing with a different level of confidence and comfort. The job of the student is to present the most thoughtful, personal, and authentic version of themselves in their applications.
